A 2010 Junior Players Thoughts on The First Tee Core Value, Integrity

Katie McLaughlin, The First Tee of Naples/Collier

Integrity:  By simply keeping up with current events, I have observed many examples of society’s lack of integrity in business, politics and sports.  People today often take the easy way out and rely on excuses, deceptions and omissions.

My role model, Bobby Jones lost the U.S. Open by one shot because he called a penalty on himself.  When lauded for his actions, Jones said, “You may as well praise a man for not robbing a bank.”  His action exemplified his commitment to preserving integrity in the game of golf over greed.  Golf depends on players having integrity and honesty.  Every stroke should be counted and the rules should be applied fairly and not conveniently.

In the last three years, I have enjoyed many hours coaching and mentoring young children through The First Tee.  As a coach, I promote integrity and honesty while playing golf.  I hope that the children I have mentored will apply the core value of integrity in all aspects of their lives.
